Only application installations that use a System Restore restorept. So it's a good idea to create a restore point manually before you install an application that you suspect won't have one a restorept.

For example, before installing a screensaver you've downloaded from the Internet or a beta program from a software vendor, you should manually create a restore point. If you successfully restored your computer to a previous state, and the computer is performing as it should be, you are finished.

On the Welcome page, click Create a restore point. On the Create a Restore Point page, enter a descriptive name for your restore point, as shown in Figure 3, and then click Create The Restore Point Created page confirms that the new restore point has been created. I think it's a good idea to manually create a restore point before you download and install any application from the Internet.

System Restore starts. On the Welcome to System Restore page, click Restore my computer to an earlier time if it is not already selected , and then click Next.

Now just reboot the machine by clicking the start menu like item in the bottom left and choosing L ogout then Reboot from the menu that pops up.

Last but not least you need to run a system restore now that you can get back into the system. Fire up system restore. Now choose a date from system restore when the system was operating as you intended it to. NOTE : If the message that you received referred to the software file, replace "system" with "software" in the preceding command. For example, you would type ren software software. You should receive a "One file copied" informational message. I like this trick. Every time I do it, I think about all those people doing repair installs in-place upgrades.

Here are the symptoms. You just need to get that hard drive into a working Windows XP computer for a few minutes. Make sure you have your computer set to show hidden files and also system files.
